Alfred RAMSEY
(1813-1894)

Alfred M(OORE?) RAMSEY was born 19 Feb 1813, perhaps in Baltimore, Maryland (this location according to a DAR application filed by one of his descendants; this is not proven). Family Bible records indicate that his mother, Elisebeth RAMSEY, died on 16 Mar 1845 "in her 83rd year". He apparently moved into Georgia during his youth, as there is an 1830 Census record for Walton County, Georgia that lists the following:

1830 Federal Census for Walton County, Georgia, pg. 127
Alfred RAMSEY
White males: 15-20 - 1.
White females: 10-15 - 1; 15-20 - 1; 60-70 - 1 (his mother Elisebeth?)

On 23 Dec 1834, Alfred married Harriet Asenath STARR, daughter of Silas STARR and Elizabeth KAIN.

I cannot locate Alfred and Harriet in the 1840 GA Census, but given the numbers and ages of those living with Silas STARR, it is possible that they were living with he and his wife.

Alfred and Harriet lived in Newton County, Georgia and had the following children:

  1. Augustus Monroe, b. 5 Jan 1837, d. 17 Sep 1862 from wounds received in the Battle of Sharpsburg in Maryland.
  2. Ophelia Parks, b. 4 May 1839, d. 21 Jul 1871. (Married Joshua Hope MALAIER.)
  3. Georgia Ann Elizabeth, b. 23 Apr 1846, d. 29 Aug 1920. (Married (1) Newton F. WILLINGHAM and (2) Henry Clay STARR.)
  4. Virginia Ann Dill, b. 28 Jun 1849, d. 14 Jun 1909. (Married Alexander Douglas MARTIN.)
  5. Alfred Iverson, b. 5 Mar 1854, d. 11 Jun 1855.
  6. Ivarson A.???, b. 5 Mar 1854/d. 1854???. (This is based on confusing entries in the family Bible record of Alfred and Harriet STARR.)

Alfred and Harriet appear in the following federal census records:

Alfred and Harriet then moved to the Sunnyside area of Spalding County, Georgia around 6 Apr 1872 after purchasing 4 acres of land from Mrs. Nancy Dorsey for $100.

Alfred's last will and testament was filed in Spalding County, Georgia in Jan 1894. He died in Sunnyside, Georgia on 11 Jun 1894 and the following appeared in a local newspaper:

Taken from the "Griffin Weekly News and Sun" of Griffin, Georgia; 15 Jun 1894 issue:
"News reached the city last night of the death of A. M. Ramsey, an old and highly respected citizen of Sunny Side, who was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge of this city and was a Mason who was respected over the State. For a number of years, Mr. Ramsey was an agent for the Central R.R. at Sunny Side..."

Harriet followed Alfred in death on 18 May 1896 at Orchard Hill, Georgia. They are both buried in the Sunnyside Methodist Church Cemetery in Sunnyside, Georgia.
